Farming the Future

Posted on January 7, 2011

Farmers of the Future!

Some city people call it the “country” fair, but just about every rural county has its own fair and the Dutchess County Fair, in New York State, attracts over 500,000 visitors a year.

This year, 2009, the 4-H Club dairy cow competition was a proud moment for Pine Plains.  Gina Brooks  and her brother, Patrick, showed two of her cows, a Brown Swiss and a Holstein, which she has been keeping in Barry Chase’s barn.

Here is a slide show of the Pine Plains 4-H Club showing at the fair.

We are very proud of these kids and look forward to what they will do next!

Oh… do feel you need to see some fair midway activies and amusement rides to make the fair seem real?  Well…

WHY THIS WEBSITE

I came to Pine Plains by choice, not by chance of birth.

But the small-town rural community I chose is changing. The farmers have, for the most part, sold to people from the city and fields are becoming lawns.

And, like the land, people, too, are becoming subdivided as difference breeds distance rather than discourse.

I have been making these videos to preserve and reconstitute what I can of a changing way of life and to share it with the community.

On a more personal level, I am making this website as a way of holding on to the reasons why I came here.
