Love Where You Live: The Story of Hammertown

Posted on January 7, 2011

Hammertown is a local enterprise that set itself apart from the ordinary, the “good enough”, by always striving to figure out how things could be done better and living up to its motto:  Love Where You Live.

It made them successful enough to be able to invite their customers in the community to celebrate their 25th anniversary in Pine Plains.

From time to time events hosted by Hammertown will be videotaped and appear on this website.  Here is a sample, an early cooking class.

And here is a class held at Hammertown on how to make and roll your own Chinese dumplings!  Enjoy!

Hammertown supports the community in many ways such as holding special sales that benefit local charities.

WHY THIS WEBSITE

I came to Pine Plains by choice, not by chance of birth.

But the small-town rural community I chose is changing. The farmers have, for the most part, sold to people from the city and fields are becoming lawns.

And, like the land, people, too, are becoming subdivided as difference breeds distance rather than discourse.

I have been making these videos to preserve and reconstitute what I can of a changing way of life and to share it with the community.

On a more personal level, I am making this website as a way of holding on to the reasons why I came here.
